Migrating From Yotpo To FastComments

We've had a consistent flow of Shopify merchants inquiring about Yotpo alternatives and how to transfer their product reviews off the platform. This post discusses what to consider in a Yotpo alternative, how the FastComments migration works from start to finish, and what changes once you're using FastComments.

Who This Post Is For

This guide is for eCommerce merchants and store owners using Yotpo for product reviews who seek a faster, lighter, or more affordable alternative. Most of the merchants we speak to are on Shopify, but FastComments functions the same on WooCommerce stores, BigCommerce, custom storefronts, and headless setups. The migration process is the same regardless of where your storefront operates.

Why To Move

  • FastComments is fast. Yotpo loads nearly a megabyte of JavaScript and multiple third-party round-trips, which can slow down product pages.
  • Reviews don't appear live. A shopper submits a review, the page prompts them to check their inbox, and the review only appears after some time.
  • FastComments offers more straightforward pricing with no feature restrictions based on tiers.

FastComments provides star ratings and review threads in a single ~30KB widget that updates in real time. New reviews stream into every open page the moment they are posted, no reload required! Our traffic-based plan encompasses ratings, AI moderation, multi-state moderation, the Questions feature, and complete data export. Many customers pay only a dollar, with per-admin and moderator seat pricing available for larger organizations.

A Live Experience

The FastComments Summary Widget is live, just like our comments and chat widgets. When a review is made, the ratings update instantly without needing a refresh. This can be beneficial for product launches.

FastComments also operates outside Shopify if you decide to move or run different stores across various platforms.

Yotpo vs FastComments At A Glance

A quick side-by-side comparison of the aspects merchants inquire about when searching for a Yotpo alternative:

  • Widget weight: Yotpo transfers 800KB+ of JavaScript across several round-trips. FastComments transfers 38KB in a single round-trip.
  • Live reviews: Yotpo necessitates a page reload to display new reviews. FastComments sends new stars and comments to every open page in real time.
  • Pricing: Yotpo charges based on review volume across tiered plans with feature restrictions. FastComments offers flat pricing based on page traffic and includes every feature on all plans.
  • Photo and video reviews: Both support them.
  • Question and answer reviews: Yotpo sells Q&A as an additional module. FastComments incorporates it through the built-in Questions feature.
  • AI moderation: Yotpo provides basic auto-publish rules. FastComments includes AI agents with configurable per-comment scoring and audit logs, along with manual and automatic publishing configuration.
  • Data export: Yotpo restricts full export behind higher tiers. FastComments includes complete CSV and JSON export on every plan.
  • Migration from a competitor: Yotpo charges for migration concierge services. FastComments manages it free of charge through a support ticket.

How Migration Works

Yotpo does not provide a clean self-serve export that maps neatly into a public importer schema, so we manage Yotpo migrations through our support team instead of the standard import page. The end-to-end process is:

  1. Open a support ticket with us and inform us that you're moving from Yotpo.
  2. We send you instructions for exporting your data from Yotpo. The export covers reviews, ratings, photos, verified-buyer flags, and threaded replies.
  3. You send the export back to us in the ticket.
  4. We map every field into FastComments and load it into a staging tenant linked to your account, allowing you to preview the result before anything goes live on your store.
  5. Once you approve the preview, we promote the data to your production tenant.

Most Yotpo migrations are completed within a week from the time we receive the export.

What Gets Preserved

The mapping includes everything Yotpo stores per review:

  • Star ratings and the aggregated product rating
  • Review text, threaded replies, and reply timestamps
  • Photo and video attachments (we transfer the files to our CDN)
  • Verified-buyer flags
  • Customer identifiers, so review counts on customer profiles match what they were before
  • Submission timestamps, so the chronological order on your product pages remains intact

If you have Yotpo questions and answers, those map onto FastComments' Questions feature on the same product threads.

Replacing The Widget

Once the data is transferred, replace the Yotpo widget on your product page template with the FastComments widget. We're a Shopify app, so for most stores, this is a one-line block in your theme. The install wizard covers Shopify, headless setups, and the major front-end frameworks. We can assist with that.

You can run Yotpo and FastComments side by side on a single product temporarily if you want to compare the appearance and functionality before fully transitioning.

Common Questions About Switching From Yotpo

Is FastComments cheaper than Yotpo?

In almost every case, yes. FastComments operates on one flat traffic-based plan that includes every feature, while Yotpo charges per review across tiered plans and adds overage fees. Compute the numbers for your store using the pricing calculator.

Can I keep my Yotpo reviews when I switch?

Yes. The migration preserves every review, every rating, every photo and video attachment, every threaded reply, and every verified-buyer flag. Submission timestamps come through so the chronological order on your product pages stays unchanged.

Does FastComments work outside Shopify?

Yes. FastComments operates on Shopify, WordPress, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, custom storefronts, and headless setups. The install wizard covers the major front-end frameworks.

Can I run Yotpo and FastComments side by side first?

Yes. You can mount both widgets on a single product page during the staging preview to compare how they appear and feel on your storefront, and then remove Yotpo when you're ready to make a complete transition.

What about Yotpo Loyalty, Yotpo SMS, or Yotpo Email?

FastComments is a reviews and live commenting platform. It does not manage loyalty programs, SMS marketing, or email marketing campaigns. If you use those Yotpo products currently, you may want to retain them or migrate to a dedicated tool when you move reviews to FastComments.

Note that we'd like to develop this functionality, and if you're interested in being a beta tester for them, we will happily prioritize this on our short-term roadmap.

Will my star ratings still show on my product pages?

Yes. The FastComments widget displays the aggregate star rating, the individual review stars, and the review count in the same locations where the Yotpo widget did. Each review's HTML is structured so search engines can extract the rating data on the page.

Will switching from Yotpo to FastComments affect my SEO?

If the URLs of your product pages remain unchanged, no. The review content moves to the new widget on the same URLs, and search engines view the same products with the same reviews on the same pages. If you're altering URLs as part of the transition, provide us with the old and new URL pairs in the support ticket so the importer can map them.

Is there a free trial?

Every FastComments plan begins with a free trial. You can create an account, run the import preview, and view the widget on a staging tenant before you commit to a paid plan.
